Kainos, a leading provider of digital services and platforms, has picked up the award for Digital Transformation Project of the Year in the 2019 UK IT Industry Awards for its work with Her Majesty’s Passport Office (HMPO).
The UK IT awards celebrate excellence and recognise those individuals, projects, organisations and technologies that have excelled in the use, development and deployment of IT over the previous 12 months. The awards are regarded as the benchmark for outstanding performance across the UK computer industry.
Also, in a new category, Rising Star of the Year, Kainos’ Jordan McDonald was awarded Highly Commended for his outstanding commitment to and achievement in his work. Jordan has successfully led several challenging AI first projects and is a thought leader in the wider Northern Ireland tech ecosystem.
The Digital Transformation Project of the Year recognises the most outstanding digital transformation project that transforms the workplace, remodels client relations and brand recognition, and has a clear focus on user experience, not just the technology.
Supported by and in collaboration with Kainos, HMPO built its Digital Customer Services (DCS) solution, a digital-only passport application, in-house and from the ground up. Delivered in May 2019, on time, to budget and quality standards, DCS enables citizens to apply for, renew or replace a passport securely online, and incorporates innovative features such as a photo upload tool, the ability to confirm someone’s identity online, digital declaration and clear guidance through every step.
To date, the DCS has processed over 6 million applications, upped online applications to 70% and removed circa 6.5 million pieces of paper from the system. The service is now recognised as an exemplar for other UK Government departments and has also caught the attention of international governments around the world.
Philippa Manley, Project & Digital Services Director at HMPO, said “When we set out our transformation programme to 2020, we had the clear aim of becoming a modern, digital business, enabling customers to easily interact with us online. In partnering with Kainos, we have created a service which is truly valuable for the public and sets a high standard within UK Government.”
Russell Sloan, Digital Services Director at Kainos, added “We’re again delighted to have the contribution of our people and our teams working alongside important government clients like HMPO recognised at the UK IT Industry Awards. Digital transformation continues to be a key area of our work and it’s satisfying to see how we’re enabling citizens to access improved online services and giving users an experience they really value. It’s also highly rewarding for our people who are engaged and motivated by creating services which make a difference to people’s lives.”
